Tape Dispenser Design For Assembly (DFA)

6_tape_measure_05Feb14-2.jpg

I redesigned a packing tape hand dispenser to optimize the design for assembly (DFA). By focusing on DFA, this reduces the manufactures cost (less inventory, lower labor cost, etc.)

I compared the new design with a popular model currently on the market--the Scotch packing tape dispenser, model number ST-181. While maintaining the same functionally and performance, my design had 22 few parts and 27 fewer assembly steps. My design took 75% less time to assemble with a 4.7 times higher assembly efficiency per the Product Design for Manufacturing and Assembly book by Geoffrey Boothroyd and Peter Dewhurst (2001) guidelines.

All work on this project was done by me. Programs used included Solid works for 3D cad, Adobe Illustrator, and Photoshop. Design for Assembly (DFA) Review
